As the high school season has unfolded, several sophomores have taken noticeable steps forward—showcasing improved skill sets, growing confidence, and a stronger overall impact on the court. Whether it’s expanded scoring ability, enhanced playmaking, defensive versatility, or leadership beyond their years, these young prospects are beginning to separate themselves as names college programs will want to track closely in the coming years. In this edition of Sophomore Bumps, we highlight a group of rising talents who have elevated their performances this season and continue to trend upward as part of an exciting future class.

2028 Jaleel Smith (Hunter Huss)
There is no doubt about it… Jaleel Smith has taken the next step with his game in being an offensive power as a guard at Hunter Huss. Nearly averaging 30 points per game, Smith has proven what we have been saying over and over. He excels in creating and making plays for himself, scores the ball from a variety of levels, attacks well off the bounce and puts pressure on the defense, and continues to shine in other areas of the floor with his vision and impact. Smith is having a HUGE season and will be putting him in the discussion for NC POY at least.

2028 Paul Cauthen Jr. (Reidsville)
Now at Reidsville, Cauthen Jr. has been making his presence felt along side Dionte Neal. The junior guard looks to continue the strong line of talent coming through the program, as he has been averaging 22.6 points per game this season. Shooting 59 percent from the floor overall, he presents problems with his assertiveness, ability to display quickness and handles, and creating well for himself. Cauthen has helped bring a new two-headed monster to Reidsville this season, as he is making his mark early on with his new program.

2028 Mason Murphy (Eastern Alamance)
Murphy is one that we have highlighted before with intrigue, as we were eager to see what he was able to carry over from a strong summer into the season. He hasn’t disappointed so far, averaging nearly 22 points and 7 rebounds per game. As the 6’5 prospect, he has good early size, the ability to consistently knock down shots from multiple levels, can create and score for himself, rebound and create extra opportunities, and one that brings versatility for his team. Truly a prospect to keep an eye on more with what he is showing this season.

2028 Tjay Brunson (Cleveland)
Brunson is another one that we have been high on and have been pushing for people to take notice of more. He has a lot to offer but also has a lot of upside in his game, as Brunson has been leading the back in a big way with 20ppg, 8rpg, 2apg, and 1.5spg at Cleveland. The 6’6 prospect is explosive in finishing or attacking the rim, but is comfortable in multiple areas of the court. His energy and motor clearly stands out, he asserts himself on the glass, runs the floor well, can make plays off the bounce, and shows flashes of areas he continues to improve in. This young man is a D1 prospect that you will be hearing about more.
