This past weekend, Phenom Hoops concluded our final live period of the travel ball season with our tenth annual Summer Havoc. No matter where the event is held (Spartanburg, Rock Hill, or Bermuda Run), Summer Havoc has consistently put prospects in a position to be seen by all levels of college coaches. This year’s edition was no different. The three-day event featured an impressive mix of Division I, II, and III (in addition to JUCO and NAIA) prospects. Although coaches were primarily in attendance to recruit prospects in the Class of 2026, it was difficult to ignore everything Quentel “QJ” Young showcased as a rising junior. Let’s take a closer look…

We detailed his game briefly in our Elite One feature piece yesterday, stating, “Despite being the lone junior on this roster, Young is starting to tap into his upside as a long-term prospect. We will talk more extensively about his potential breakout season later this week, but it’s easy to see his appeal with this team. His size, skill, and shot-making ability already make him a real problem for opponents. Young continues to develop his body and get stronger, which will only continue to raise his overall ceiling. He has as much appeal as anyone on the roster.”

Young already possesses legitimate feel and creation skills with an enticing frame that will only continue to add strength. He’s a crafty three-level scorer who can find success with or without the ball in his hands. Young mixes it up well as a scoring threat to keep opposing defenses guessing, but also displays quality vision and playmaking instincts. He’s a smooth shooter who moves well as a cutter and consistently fills it up from beyond the arc. Young asserts himself in the midrange, finishes well around the basket, and makes the extra pass when available. He positions himself to rebound and make plays defensively. Already impactful, Young should continue trending up in a big way.

Given the structure of Chambers roster following the departure of their top two players, Young will need to take a sizable leap for this group to maintain their expected level of success. Fortunately, he’s more than capable of taking that next step. He will be alongside guys like Cameron Thompson, Zyon White, and Malik McCotter for the upcoming season. Expect Young’s production to skyrocket.
