On Saturday, Phenom Hoops will travel to Carmel Christian in Matthews, North Carolina to host our sixth annual Phenom Hoops MLK Showcase. The one-day event will begin at noon and the final game will start at 7:30, featuring six games of exciting action between twelve highly talented programs—both from public and private ranks. In preparation for the event, we will take a closer look at each matchup and highlight individual players to monitor…

The opening contest will be between Hickory High School and Forsyth Country Day School. Looking at Hickory, the Tornadoes (7-1) began their season as an odds-on title favorite and have seemingly improved throughout the year. Although led by brothers Jay and Jordan Powell, this is a very smart, balanced, well-coached group that knows how to compete with legitimately anyone in the state. Their roster has several pieces worthy of attention from college coaches. However, it’s clear that this matchup will be their toughest challenge of the early season. On the private school side, the Furies (18-3) haven’t skipped a beat since securing a state championship and graduating a handful of seniors. They’ve largely outperformed any possible expectations going into the season and now stand as potential back-to-back title winners. Led by Q Williams and the likes of Adam Horobey, Sacha Geremski, JR Adams, AD Dalton, and Chris Gomez, each guy is a meaningful contributor to this squad. Expect this showdown to be a highly competitive litmus test going into a critical stretch of the season.
