After nearly six months of summer basketball, the travel season has ended and the yearly shift towards high school hoops has finally begun. Although there is still a lot of basketball going on between camps, fall leagues, and other preseason jamborees, this is typically the quietest time of the year for the grassroots community. Which, in turn, means there’s no better time to start highlighting individuals who have the tools and ability to be breakout players over the next eight months. While this notion could certainly apply to a variety of prospects, the emphasis is primarily on younger guys with an increased role, new school situation, or those who simply take the next step in their progression. Let’s take a closer look at Tre Roper (Knightdale/Team Loaded) and everything he brings to a team…
Following a freshman season where he averaged 14.0 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 3.4 APG, and 2.2 BPG with 46/26/63 splits, Roper looks prepared to take the next step in his progression. Although he’s always been an advanced, highly productive player, he’s really made a lasting impression over the recent months. Roper simply brings so much to a team, and it’s quite easy to see. He’s an incredibly strong, physically imposing guard with a nonstop motor, rugged approach, and refined, well-rounded skillset. Roper is inch-for-inch one of the best rebounders you’ll ever see and clearly possesses a knack for outworking opponents on both ends of the floor. He’s built like a tank and uses that to his advantage to create constant matchup problems.
Offensively, Roper is a quality creator who displays an impressive blend of IQ, strength, and penetration ability. He sees the floor well as a playmaker and looks to make the correct read whenever possible, but can also barrel down opponents en route to the rim. Roper finishes extremely well through contact, above the rim, and effectively with either hand. However, he’s made visible strides as a perimeter shooter, both off the catch and bounce, which has unlocked his game even more. Roper moves well without the ball, does the dirty work, and is capable of filling in the gaps or taking over a game. On the other end, he’s a highly versatile defender who can legitimately guard three, four, and even five positions depending on matchup. Watching him consistently shine as a dominant focal point while playing with and against the top players in his class was undeniably impressive. The strides he’s made as a creator, perimeter shooter, and scorer off the bounce plus everything mentioned above should make Roper poised for a special sophomore season.
