Game Breakdown:
Cloer has been a premier prospect in the country for quite some time, as he sits clearly as a Top 50 (Top 25 for some national outlets) throughout. Phenom Hoops has had the chance to watch Cloer more than many since being here in North Carolina. When you talk about his game, Cloer has shown time after time that he can be a clear weapon with upside left in his game. Cloer has a unique blend of skill, shot-making, and skill as a 6’7 prospect. He is at his best when he is decisive, whether that is getting to his spots for his jumper or attacking off the bounce quickly. Cloer’s ability to get to his spots and be a shot-maker from outside clearly attracts the eyes of college coaches, scoring from behind the arc with ease. However, Cloer has that gear that allows him to cover space, attack off the bounce, and get inside to finish strong and at the rim. He brings a smooth overall feel in being comfortable in operating from multiple levels, but he also does a great job in flourishing as a decision-maker and making the right plays.
POB’s Thoughts on Recruitment:
Cloer’s recruitment has been interesting to watch. Not long ago, Cloer was pegged by many to be a UNC commit, especially when he received that offer from the Tar Heels. And though some may still think that way, I believe things have heated up from what I’ve seen, and now more programs have entered the picture.
Starting with UNC, it is clearly a program that he is familiar with, and I believe he could fit in well with, especially at the wing position and the Tar Heels proving they like prospects of his caliber and shot making. NC State though, is another program that would allow him to return to NC, and in speaking with Cloer in the past, the Wolfpack was a favorite of his growing up. With Will Wade and the new staff there, NC State has clearly made waves and has changed the viewing of what it means to be playing in Raleigh.
UConn and Kentucky entered the picture this summer and clearly have made waves with Cloer. Kentucky’s new style of play and shot-making from three could be appealing to him, as it fits well with his style of play. And UConn’s recent history of success with championships and prospects kind of speaks for itself.
Florida is one that I could easily see entering the picture and should be one to watch as well. Now down in Florida playing at IMG, the Gators could easily be a strong push for him this high school season and coming off a national championship, there is a lot to like about the program and it could fit his style. The last program I would continue to have a strong eye on is Alabama.
