Southern Durham High School
(Durham, NC)

2017-18: 21-7 (12-2)
3A 2nd Round

Gone to Eastern Kentucky is the team’s leading scorer, assists, steals and second leading rebounder Jomaru Brown. 2018-19 starts year two of the David Noel regime. Head Coach David Noel, an alum of Southern Durham High School played at the University of North Carolina and was drafted 39th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks. He had a 12 year professional career which ended last year as he took the Head Coaching job at Southern Durham.

Year two has a Southern Durham roster with a load of talent. This team should be considered one of the favorites in to represent the 3A East in the state finals.

The Impact Transfer

6’4″ 2020 Ricky Council IV is currently ranked #5 in North Carolina’s 2020 class. This would firmly place him among the nation’s Top 100 prospects. That is a very deserved claim, Council IV is a major talent. He is a supreme shot maker, who has range and confidence at each level. Council IV is a major athlete which pairs well with his great length to make for an incredibly exciting player. Only scratching the surface, expect a huge year from Council IV this season and his recruitment to start to take shape of where it should be.

The Senior Leader

Last week 6’5″ 2019 Jayvis Harvey committed to Radford. On the outside looking in you wonder how Radford got him, but looking at the fact Radford is among the top of their league, making them a shot to get to the NCAA each year and Radford is where Harvey wanted to be. Regardless, Radford got a super scorer, who is a good athlete with great positional size. Last season, Harvey was Southern Durham’s second leading scorer (13.3) and its leading rebounder (5). He also shot 51% from the field and 48% (51-107) from 3. This is his team, this is his senior year and this team is slated to make a deep run in the play offs. Watch for a big year.

The Stopper

6’2″ 2020 Lamar Lightbrown is a supreme athlete and has the potential to be a lock down type defender. He has quick feet to go with great length and a tenacity to really take charge on that end of the floor. His ability to defend the oppositions top perimeter player will really play a factor for this team.

The X-Factor

While Lightbrown will certainly play a major role for this team, it is 6’4″ 2020 MJ Wilkerson who may be the teams best, and most explosive, overall athlete. He has all of the tools, with great length to go with that explosion and this is the season for it to all come together. Many of the opposing team’s focus will be on Harvey and Council IV, so Southern Durham will need Wilkerson to step up and take his spots. He is a Division 1 talent and this season will be the one where he has the opportunity to bring in those offers.
