What a game … Coming into Phenom’s Capital City Jam all the talk was about the matchups. The fans showed up well and the players, well they were spectacular. We want to go back through the matchups we were looking forward to, and see how they actually played out during the event.
Phenom’s Capital City Jam Storline Review
#1 Wilson Vs. #1 Dorman
Coming into the event, these were being talked about as the best two public school teams in the state of South Carolina. Dorman carried a 17-game win streak into this game and Wilson won 24 of their last 25 games leading into this one.
Both teams are filled with talent, numerous Division 1 and Division 2 prospects. Hundreds of fans filled into Ben Lippen and the players responded with some incredible performances. Jamonty Williams, Allen Williamson and Alex Caldwell came out on fire for Wilson and Myles Tate, Ethan Parton and PJ Hall did a lot of damage for Dorman.
In fact, this game went into overtime. It was of those games that was so good that both teams deserved to win. The coaching was top notch, the players were top notch, the execution was top notch. However, in the end one team had to win.
The crowd left incredibly satisfied after this game, just as we knew they would. The entirety was filled with Oooh’s and Ahhh’s with numerous crowd pleasing plays and charges from the floor. Here are the players who stood out.
Player of the Game
6’ 2020 Myles Tate (Dorman)
Tate was nothing short of spectacular in this one. When Dorman was down 3 with 4 seconds to go in regulation, there was no question who the ball was going to. Tate delivered to send the game into overtime. In all he finished with 26 points and 5 rebounds. He is one of the top sophomore guards in this region and his recruitment should be on the verge of exploding. He is worth the price of admission.
Wilson’s MVP
6’4” 2019 Allen Williamson
Williamson is a name we have been familiar with for a couple years as he is a 2-time alum of the South Carolina Top 80. Each time on the floor Williamson seems to have added a new facet to his game. He has always been a smooth shooter with range, but now he is attacking the rim, finishing in traffic and rebounding very tough. Williamson finished this one with a double/double, showing his ability to score at 3 levels. Right now he carries a South Carolina State offer, that list should continue to grow.
Other Standouts
6’ SE Missouri signee Alex Caldwell (Wilson)
Caldwell is an exciting player. A high level athlete who plays with the utmost confidence. The sharp shooting guard came out firing and kept Wilson ahead for the majority of the game. Committed and signed to South East Missouri, it will be fun to track his college career. He is an incredibly exciting and productive player.
6’7 2018 Jamonty Williams (Wilson)
Williams has become a hot name among D2 programs throughout the region. He carries five offers at that level and he certainly showed why here. Williams is long, athletic and very active in the paint. He earned a lot of deflections on defense and was an active rebounder each time a shot went up. The production will continue, the recruitment should as well.
6’1 2018 Ethan Parton (Dorman)
Parton is the glue that holds Dorman together. They have a superstar in Tate and great size with multiple 6’8” players but it is Parton who is the X-factor. He is a good shooter with soft touch and deep range. He is a good ball handler in a lead or secondary role and he always seems to make the right play. D2s around the region should be looking hard at this one.
