Devon Lassiter 6’2 135 2023 Heritage High School (VA) / Boo Williams AAU
Devon is one of the best perimeter scorers in the 757 right now! The lengthy framed rising sophomore is near-automatic on spot-ups beyond the three-point arc and his footwork and shot mechanics are flawless! He has the look of a natural, a pure shooter whose every shot looks like it’s going in! After skill work under the tutelage of Menchville HS Head Coach and former NBA guard, Lamont Strothers, DJ has added scoring versatility to his game and now brings very good scoring off the dribble to his offensive resume. Once a one-dimensional threat, he has learned to take advantage of his length including a long wingspan as he attacks the rim. His dribbles are more purposeful and his overall offensive game has really taken off with the realization that he can score in a variety of ways. He is efficient and productive from all levels and has the potential to be a prolific scorer at the high school level.
DJ has an extremely aesthetic jump shot. His smooth and repeatable shot mechanics including a high release allows him to even hit contested shots at a high rate. He moves off the ball effectively and has quality footwork allowing for a quick release. Has gained very good consistency shooting off screens or relocating off the dribble and knocking down dribble pull-ups. Devon attacks space so well sitting into his shot fakes and keeping his long frame and his dribbles low. He uses his rangy strides and generates a good burst as a result of staying low and capitalizing on his length. He uses crossovers, step back crossovers, and plays on balance. Creates space using the step back but his length allows him to shoot over many guards. DJ can score with either hand at the rim and will be more effective finishing as his body fills out. He has a great touch and contorts his body nicely so as to score around contact and scores over length with skillfully executed floaters and runners. Has great scoring instincts. He’s going to be a major point producer for Heritage High School not only with his scoring but DJ also does a great job finding teammates and is a very good passer while on the move.
DJ moves his feet nicely and anticipates well defensively. His long wingspan and overall length are a definite asset and he moves his feet nicely. You’ll also find DJ battling inside for rebounds and making plays in passing lanes as he stays active on the defensive end. Perhaps shooting is in his DNA! DJ’s dad Devon Lassiter was also a high-scoring guard who could fill it up from anywhere on the floor when he starred at Warwick High School (Newport News VA) in the mid to late 1990s! I expect like his Dad, DJ will establish himself among the area’s most feared shooters and scorers in the not too distant future.
