Phenom Hoops continues their recruiting coverage around the country, as we now bring you the latest on 2023 Gavin Walsh from IMG Academy. The 6’7 prospect from Maryland has added a few new offers to his list this summer and he talks about all the latest with us, including his newest offer from Stetson and who has been staying strong with him.
Game Description:
“Versatile, gritty, and I play with a chip on my shoulder. I like to operate best in read and react situations like fake handoffs or closeout opportunities or even pick and pop or pick and roll situations.”
Phenom: How has your recruitment been this summer overall for you'
Walsh: Recruitment has gone extremely well for me. I’ve picked up a total of 10 offers between this summer and last summer. Each one of these schools that has offered me brings so much to the table and is pretty diverse in their qualities and characteristics, which leaves me with a great list of options to choose from. Those schools include UMass, Loyola, UMBC, Albany, Columbia, Penn, Towson, Navy, Stetson, and Binghamton. I’ve loved building relationships with each of the schools and the coaches that have recruited me. It has been a dream come true.
Phenom: What has been the general message those schools have been saying that they like about your game and what you can provide'
Walsh: Definitely my versatility. They love how if a big steps out and tries to guard me on the perimeter, I can blow right by them and attack the basket; or if he sags off a little bit, I can knock the three-ball down. They also love how hard I play and how I play as sort of an underdog with a chip on my shoulder.
Phenom: Most recent offer came from Stetson. Thoughts on them'
Walsh: I like Stetson a lot. I just recently started talking to the coaching staff here, but they seem very welcoming and are big into the family and relationship concept, which I like a lot because I’m a big family guy. The campus looks nice as well; definitely interested to see their style of play.
Phenom: What schools would you say have built a strong relationship with you so far'
Walsh: I have had a really solid relationship with all of them but as of now, I am really continuing to build my relationships strongly with Penn, Towson, and Stetson the most.
Phenom: Have you been able to make any visits' Any visits you have set up'
Walsh: I’ve gone to Binghamton, UMBC, Navy, Albany, and Columbia, but I am excited to take officials to Towson, Penn, and Stetson. Towson is Sept. 17, the rest we are still planning.
Phenom: What other schools have been showing interest your way'
Walsh: There is a lot of them. Schools like LaSalle, Richmond, Davidson, Drexel, Brown, Princeton, New Hampshire, Air Force, Lafayette, NJIT, Holy Cross, Austin Peay, FGCU, DePaul, Boston, Yale, North Texas, Kansas State, Lehigh, George Washington, Campbell, George Mason, Siena, FAU, James Madison, Bowling Green, Toledo, Elon, and Jacksonville State.
Phenom: Are there certain qualities or things you are looking for in a school'
Walsh: Definitely the fit. As I have said to people before, that saying seems cliché but due to all the different programs and styles of play I have played in, I really feel as if I understand what the best “fit” means for me.
