“Phenom Open Gym Tour “Central Cabarrus”

Phenom Hoop Report travelled to Concord, North Carolina to cover open gym for Central Cabarrus. Central Cabarrus finished 6-19 last season and look to rebound from a disappointing season. Playing in the tough and competitive NCHSAA 3A South Piedmont Conference, Central Cabarrus had few opportunities for wins against the likes of Cox Mill, A.L. Brown, Concord and JM Robinson. That being said, coach Jim Baker feels much better this season about the prospects of Central Cabarrus. Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the impact players.

6’4 2021 Christian Cornish'

Christian Cornish has a physically chiseled frame with broad shoulders and thin hips. He’s strong, long and athletic and look for him to have a breakout season for Central Cabarrus. Last season, he averaged right around10 PPG and 5 APG and has the ability to play on the perimeter or post up smaller guards. In addition, he cam be used as a secondary ball handler that 'can initiate the offense in the half court. We were impressed with his relentless approach to the game. He plays extremely hard on both ends of the court and will be asked to guard multiple positions next year which helps illustrates his versatility on defense.

5’11 2023 Jaiden Thompson

Jaiden Thompson will be a welcomed new addition to the Central Cabarrus team. The freshmen point guard will be asked to play huge minutes and be the team’s undeniable team leader. Thompson has the ball on a string and is terrific at reading and coming off ball screens. Thompson should provide a cool, yet calming effect to this team.

6’4 2020 Zach Bessette'

We have seen Zach Bessett numerous times and liked what we saw each and every time. Last season, Bessette averaged 11 PPG and 4RPG and will be asked to do much more for his senior season. We’re talking about a young player that can score from all three levels, but is extremely dangerous and yet efficient from the mid-range. Bessette understands the game extremely well and is constantly making hustle plays on both ends of the court.

6’3 2021 Dylan Steve

Last season, Dylan Steve was carving out a name on the JV season as he averaged 18 PPG and 5 APG. Moving to the 2019-2020 season, we really liked the potential of Dylan Steve. He’s extremely crafty, has good fundamentals and high basketball IQ, plus he has a little flair to his game. In open gym, Steve was scoring effectively from the mid-range to the perimeter.

6’3 Marvin “Trey” Bost III

Marvin “Trey” Bost will be “a jack of all trades” type player. He’s tough and brings that blue-collar lunch pail mentality to each possession and simply won’t back down from a challenge. He loves to compete and steps it up immensely on the defensive side of the ball.
