Lavar Batts Sr. and Jay M. Robinson was one of our next gyms Phenom Hoop Report headed out to, part of our Open Gym Tour. After finishing last year 9-17, the Bulldogs look to show improvement with more experience.

Watching this team, they show tremendous versatility on the floor, with everyone being able to push the ball, defend, and be a primary ball-handler on offense. But looking at each player, each one brings a unique skill set to the table, as the Bulldogs look to make noise in the South Piedmont conference as well as around the state of North Carolina.

2020 G Josh Abee

A transfer from Northwest Cabarrus, Abee brings a high IQ, a great feel as a point guard, and experience to the table. On the floor, he was able to pick his spots to attack, was patient with the ball, and carried a fantastic mid-range shot. He also displayed that he will be one of several ball handlers that can push the pace or set up in the halfcourt. Already holding offers from Rice, Brevard and Mount Olive, Abee looks to continue to showcase his talent at a high level.

2020 6’4 Justin Boateng

Boateng may be the most intriguing prospect on the team and one that isn’t receiving a lot of attention. Division II schools should definitely be taking a look at him, as the wing prospect brings ball-handling, a scorer’s mentality, and is incredibly smooth at getting to the rim and finishing. But he also displayed a fantastic ability to knock down the outside shot consistently. With his length, versatility, and mentality, expect a big season for the senior.

2020 Charles Reed Jr.

Reed is another quick, attacking guard for this team, that gets downhill quickly and physically. Reed is a smart ballhandler on the floor, picking the right situations, reading defenses, and excelling in pick and roll situations. He is at his best when he uses his speed and attacks, finishing multiple times around the rim.

2020 Elijah Hightower

Hightower brings the athleticism to the team immediately, showcasing fantastic bounce that will have fans standing in the seats. But what Hightower also brings is not only ball handling, but a high energy/ motor type prospect. Hightower also picks his times to attack or pull up, as well as have his head up to find his teammates. He is at his best when he slashes and uses that athleticism around the rim/ paint; there aren’t too many that are going to stop him.

Notes:

There will be a few other guards that will be able to contribute this season, as well as a few football players that should also provide needed depth. It will be interesting to see who steps up outside the starters but look for the Bulldogs to improve this season.
