Tyler Chatman 6’3 175 2020 Nansemond River HS, Suffolk VA
Tyler is a very knowledgeable and fundamentally sound basketball player. He has a strong, physical frame, is quick as a result of his execution of sound mechanics (being ball quick) and has a textbook shooting stroke with three point range. He is a smart, poised scorer who scores in a variety of ways and at all levels. He does most of his damage playing off the ball possessing excellent footwork and receiving the ball shot ready. Has a nice high release on his jumper and very good range, solid on screen actions and spot ups. If he gets his feet set he’s as close to automatic as they get. Tyler uses the ball fake effectively and attacks aggressive closeouts intelligently. He uses the hesitation move nicely, has a very good crossover and changes speeds well. He gets a nice burst out of his first stride because it is long and powerful and set up nicely most often with a ball fake or a jab step move. Although not overly explosive off the bounce he does have a degree of shiftiness and a nice burst off change of direction dribble moves making it difficult for defenders to stay in front of him. Tyler also understands how to use his overpowering strength and as a result has become a more opportunistic scorer off the dribble picking and choosing his spots effectively. Attacks the rim with aggression and is a strong finisher, also a very good passer on the move and demonstrates strong playmaking skills. Tyler has enjoyed a great deal of success and productivity as both a shooting guard and a lead guard when called upon. He has a consistent pull up jumper and plays on balance allowing him to thrive in the mid range. Understands how to set and use screens. Because of his physical attributes Tyler has been tasked with playing various positions on both ends of the floor. A savvy, high IQ defender he is able to contain the dribble nicely and has solid defensive mechanics and quick lateral mobility. He is a very good rebounder as he has a nose for the basketball and is a tireless and active defender. Tyler employs his physical frame and powerful first and second jump to outwork opponents on the glass. His advanced skill set and understanding of the game is no surprise given he is the son of longtime high school and college basketball coach Franklin Chatman. Coach Chatman played collegiately at Virginia State University before high school coaching stints at Nansemond Suffolk Academy and Nansemond River High School. Coach Chatman moved to the college coaching ranks serving as the head coach at DIII Newport News Apprentice School in Newport News, VA and currently is the first head coach at the new Stratford University in Newport News VA, a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. Tyler Chatman, who is also an honor student at Nansemond River High School (Suffolk VA) is enjoying a solid spring campaign so far for Boo Williams EYBL 16U team and has begun to attract the attention of college coaches at all levels.
