There is so much to be excited about when watching Etienne Strothers play!' Not just the fact that his Dad and trainer is a former D3 All American and NBA player, not even that his brother is one of the top playmakers in Virginia and a D1 target.' Not even all the DNA of a family of college athletes, which just adds to the intrigue.' Etienne Strothers is exciting because he's a special talent with skills advanced well beyond his years!' He is a savvy floor general with an amazingly high IQ, great vision and elite passing skills.' He demonstrates great poise and leadership qualities as he is vocal and brings great energy on both ends of the floor.' Etienne handles the ball as if an extension of his arm and uses shifty footwork and change of pace, an impressive array of dribble moves all the while staying on balance and ready to make a play be it a pass with either hand off the dribble, a hesitation and blow by move or pull up under control and take the jumper. He spots cutters and delivers timely passes, on target and with good velocity.' He is crafty in that he looks defenders off when necessary to get the pass to a cutter or uses his dribble to attack angles.' Etienne is very good using change of pace action, he is quick enough to change directions and get dribble penetration and he makes quick reads.' He uses his length and jabs to get defenders off balance and can quickly elevate into a jumper or make a dribble move the moment a defender appears disadvantaged.' Etienne thrives in the mid range either scoring off the dribble or playing off the ball in catch and shoot scenarios. He attacks the basket tactically using his long strides, long wingspan and has the ability to create contact or contort his body and finish around defenders to get his shot off.' He is a very good shooter with three point range and very good shot consistency demonstrating the ability to impact the game as a primary playmaker or off the ball as a shot maker.' Defensively he knows how to use his length both as a harassing on ball defender demonstrating quick feet and sound footwork.' He will get a strip or two each game with his timing and quick hands and also tip passes with his length.' In passing lanes he anticipates nicely and again his length and quickness makes him a factor off the ball defensively.' Etienne has a long frame and broad shoulders and has indeed inherited the length that has benefited other members of his basketball family.' He might eventually grow taller than his siblings given his already impressive length.' His court presence, the poise and knowledge he demonstrates is uncanny for someone so young but he has had the opportunity to learn since day one!' Etienne is one of eight children of former NBA and European guard Lamont Strothers.' Lamont played high school basketball in Suffolk, VA before playing collegiality at Christopher Newport University where he is the schools all time leading scorer.' His 2,709 points ranks third all time in Division III.' He was a first team All America selection and named Division III Player of the Year by Basketball Times in 1991.' Lamont was a 2nd round pick by Golden State in 1991 and enjoyed stints with the Portland Trailblazers and Dallas Mavericks during his NBA career. Lamont had a 12 year pro career playing in nine countries, scoring almost 4000 points during a decorated' PBA career!' Strothers also has 18 years of coaching experience including at the professional level in Europe, collegiality at his alma mater CNU and locally at the high school and AAU level.' Lamont's brother Calvin Jr starred in football and basketball at New Hampshire. Etienne has 5 older sisters and two, Synquis and Adria played basketball.' Synquis was an All Peninsula District player while at Warwick HS and played a year at North Carolina Wesleyan.' His sister' Adria starred at Menchville HS where she scored over 1200 points for her high school career and earned a scholarship to play at Hampton University.' His older brother Allen is an All State guard at Menchville HS in Newport News and has a growing list of D1 programs pursuing him.' Etienne is oozing with talent, has advanced skills and appears to be following in the same path of his athletically and academically accomplished older siblings.' Watch for him!'
