The Phenom Challenge is one of the biggest events around the region and in the country, as 180 teams look to compete at the highest level.

We are expecting a HUGE turnout for this event in Spartanburg, SC on April 26-28. So, Phenom Hoop Report wants to do our part in starting the buzz for the event.

Players and teams, of all ages, will have a chance to play in front of college coaches throughout the weekend. But here are a few players to watch out for, as we preview teams that will be competing.

Team: Upward Stars Upstate White 16u

Bishop, Bryson (2021 | 6’ | Guard )

Bryson is coachable and skilled at the point position. Shoots it consistently from outside with range well outside the line. Manages the game well at point guard looking to get others involved and always brings energy both alone and to his teammates

Canty, Dessie (2021 | 6’4 | Wing | 3.7 GPA)

Dessie is a matchup nightmare for a lot of teams at the wing position. Rebounds exceptionally well and has an excellent second jump to get off the ground in traffic. Shoots the ball well from outside to stretch the floor and finishes strong in traffic. Uses length well to guard 2-5.

Comer, Adam (2021 | 6’8 | Post | 4.2 GPA)

Adam has great physical tools to create space inside. Developing post game but does a great job on second shots and putbacks. Blocks shots well with the size and looks to make simple plays for teammates from the low post.

DeArmond, Miller (2021 | 6’2 | Guard | 3.8 GPA)

Miller is a winner. Competes on every possession and makes all the little plays needed to win games. Strong defender who uses his speed and strength to give opposing guards a lot of problems. Shoots the ball well outside and finishes strong in transition. 3 and D player you always want on your team.

Johnson, Corey (2021 | 5’10 | Guard | 3.6 GPA)

Corey is fast. Exceptional quickness that gets past initial defenders with ease. Great footspeed on the defensive end to stay in front of guards. Finishes well in traffic and capable of knocking down multiple shots from the outside when defenders play off.

Richey, Joseph (2021 | 6’5 | Forward )

Joseph is a scorer. Capable of going off for bunches at a time, Joseph is a very strong post player who finishes well through contact. Rebounds strong and uses athletic ability well to get around defenders inside. Good handle for a post player that can catch in the high post area and make plays for himself and teammates. Very coachable.

Rogers, Bennett (2021 | 6’3 | Guard | 4.0 GPA)

Bennett is as skilled as it gets at the guard spot. Handles the ball very well at the point position to set up the offense. Individually skilled to score at all 3 levels and picks spots well. Rebounds very well for a guard and is not afraid of going inside to grab multiple rebounds a game.

Rogers, Jared (2021 | 6’1 | Wing | 3.2 GPA)

Jared is a shooter. Excels at finding open spots on the floor and has a quick release that is unphased by late closeouts. Can get hot at any moment from outside. Good quickness as well to score in transition and finish inside when defenders begin chasing off the line.

Simmons, Cole (2021 | 6’2 | Wing)

Cole knows the game. Very high basketball IQ and has great poise as he plays. Shoots the ball very well outside and a crafty finisher inside. Uses size well to guard multiple positions and create space to rebound the ball well. Lets the game come to him and always finds the right places to be to make big plays. Smart player you want on the floor.

Thomson, Ian (2021 | 6’9 | Post | 4.7 GPA)

Ian is a growing force inside. Has great length to block and disrupt shots inside. Moves well given his size and developing physicality to create space inside on the offensive end. Has a very good touch and is a capable shooter from outside. Hardworking and coachable big that has a very well rounded game at his age. Good decision maker from the low post area.

Watson, Drayton (2021 | 6’1 | Guard | 4.2 GPA)

Drayton is exactly what you want at the point position. Strong guard who can guard the full length of the floor. Finishes very well in traffic and has a quick first step to get past defenders. Gets to the rim with ease and always looking to get teammates involved. Capable outside shooter as well. Always plays hard and does whatever is needed to win games.
