Phenom Hoops continues to bring eyes all around the country, even a little international flavor. We recently were able to catch up with a very interesting prospect in the Class of 2025 in 6’10 Samuel Obenjo, a wing prospect that has size and versatility on the court and one that has been attracting the eyes of college programs.
Phenom Hoops recently spoke with Obenjo to learn more about his summer, his game, his development, and the latest going on in his recruitment. Check out what he had to say.
Phenom: How was everything this past season for you and your team? And how did this summer go for you overall?
Obenjo: Last season was a good season for me individually; had a lot of upside, and improved a lot both offensively and defensively. My team also did pretty well, especially in tournaments around Europe. My summer was overall really good. All my statistics have been going up each year with the national team. Apart from that, I felt like I did a lot of things that don’t show on paper. I also feel like our whole national team squad did good this year and out did the expectations put on us.
Phenom: How would you best describe your game and how you like to operate? Where do you flourish?
Obenjo: I would say that I’m a great defender who can guard 1-5 and rebound at a high rate. I would say on the offensive end, I’m a high-IQ player who makes the right read for the team so we can score, mainly off a drive or a transition play.
Phenom: What areas of your game have you been working on to develop?
Obenjo: I’m currently working a lot on my shooting, ball handling, and physicality.
Phenom: What are your thoughts on your latest offer? What did the staff have to say, who has been your main contact, and what all do you know about them?
Obenjo: I appreciate all the offers I’ve been getting throughout the last couple of months. The latest one I got was from LaSalle. The head coach and assistant coach I talked with liked my game both on offense and defense. I know a lot about them since they have a guy from Sweden playing in that team that I know.
Phenom: What other offers do you hold? And who has been strong with you from those?
Obenjo: I hold three offers (UT-Martin, UCF, and LaSalle). I’ve been equally in contact with all three schools and I’m currently watching how all their seasons go.
Phenom: What kind of relationships have you been able to build with these programs?
Obenjo: I’ve been building strong relationships, especially with the assistant coaches on every team.
Phenom: What other schools have been showing interest that have yet to offer?
Obenjo: Other schools I’ve been in contact with are San Diego, South Dakota, Jacksonville, UNCW, Montana, Penn, Texas A&M, Saint John’s, Xavier, Cal Poly, Louisville, and Cincinnati.
Phenom: What schools have you been able to visit? If so, what did you like about each?
Obenjo: I haven’t visited any schools as of now. I’ve been trying to focus on developing my game and getting to know the players and coaches on my current team better, so I will try to schedule visits after the new year.
