Week 1 of the Phenom Hoop State Fall League brought no shortage of intriguing storylines, setting the tone for what should be an exciting season ahead. From rising young talent stepping into the spotlight, to established names showing new layers to their game, the weekend was full of standout performances. Teams began to reveal their identities early, whether it was through balanced scoring, tough defensive stands, or key leadership emerging in crucial moments. Beyond the box scores, it was clear that several programs are reloading with fresh talent, while others are positioning themselves as legitimate contenders. The first weekend reminded us why this league continues to be a premier platform—highlighting growth, competitiveness, and the hunger to prove oneself on the hardwood.
Gaston Christian Looks Strong Week 1
On Saturday, probably the most impressive team on display in Week 1 was Gaston Christian’s Fire Babies. This will be an interesting group to watch, as they are a program that brings talent, experience, and youth all to the table. 2026 Cameron Newman will continue to be the go-to leader of this group. This is a team that looks to bring depth, shooters, and size all at key positions. A roster full of seniors and juniors, this is an experienced group that proved themselves in the first week, as Coach Duhon and company look to be in the hunt for a state title. Can they continue that trend in the coming weeks though?
2027 Collin McConneyhead in for breakout season
A weekend full of new names to learn about, McConneyhead was probably the one that left the biggest lasting impression on our scouts as he has a chance to really have a breakout season at Lake Norman Charter. Averaging just under 14 points last year for his team, he really put on a show throughout Week 1 at the Fall League, including a 35-point performance on Day 1. He has energy, he talks the talk, backs it up, and shows that he can be a strong offensive weapon with his ability to create and score, get by defenders, create contact, and display range on his shot.
2026 Cameron Thompson looking to lead the way at Chambers
We have said it a lot of the summer, but Game 1 in Week 1 for the Cougars kind of solidified for us with 2026 Cameron Thompson. A 6’5 versatile piece on the court, Thompson has a tremendous chance to lead and have a breakout season here in North Carolina, as he can do it all for this team. Thompson plays with athleticism, motor, and brings a strong offensive arsenal, being able to attack and create for himself, get to the rim, allow his defense to turn into offense, and can knock down shots from multiple areas. Truly believe he will be making his mark in Charlotte this season, and he showed that with a strong 30-point showing in Game 1.
Mallard Creek could surprise many this season
Mallard Creek will be a team to watch for this upcoming season, I believe. After going 13-14 last year overall and 7-7 in conference play, the Mavericks seem to be playing with a new energy on the court coming into the season. Offensively, they are bringing a balanced attack with strong guard play and with 2026 Lajalin Overton helping lead the way down low (even though he can operate from multiple levels). But what impressed me the most is the energy level they play on the defensive end, switching and rotating well, and just looking like a swarm of bees in how they attack opponents. I see that this team looks and feels different than last year, as I think they could be a surprise team this upcoming season.
