As the high school season approaches the halfway point, everyone should have a much clearer picture of contending teams, breakout players, and everything in between. Although there hasn’t been a ton of parity this year, it’s arguably been one of the most interesting and entertaining seasons in recent memory. Every contest seems to have some takeaway or subplot to monitor. Freedom Christian quietly has several. In addition to their team of intriguing pieces, Karsten Swinney is having yet another ridiculously productive season. Following a junior season where he posted insane scoring totals, he’s only continued to put his foot on the gas…
Through 11 games, Swinney is posting per-game averages of 31.3 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 6.2 APG, and 3.0 SPG. His scoring mark currently leads the state, and it’s difficult to see that changing. Swinney operates as the clear focal point for this group, both as a scorer and playmaker. He draws so much attention with his scoring prowess that it naturally opens up opportunities for his teammates. Swinney puts nonstop pressure on defenses from all levels. He’s quick and crafty enough to consistently generate clean looks off the bounce. Swinney touches the paint at a high volume and finishes well for his size. He knocks down three-pointers at a quality rate and is able to get to his midrange pull-up with relative ease. Swinney is a willing passer who sees the floor well when attacking.
On the other end, he does a nice job of setting the tone at the point of attack. Swinney displays great instincts and anticipation to force turnovers leading to transition play. Though slightly undersized, he possesses nice strength and toughness to make his presence felt defensively. Swinney is also a capable rebounder for his size/position. After yet another noteworthy start to the season, he should definitely have more suitors at the next level.
