This past weekend, Phenom Hoops concluded our final live period of the travel ball season with our tenth annual Summer Havoc. No matter where the event is held (Spartanburg, Rock Hill, or Bermuda Run), Summer Havoc has consistently put prospects in a position to be seen by all levels of college coaches. This year’s edition was no different. The three-day event featured an impressive mix of Division I, II, and III (in addition to JUCO and NAIA) prospects. Although coaches were primarily focused on the oldest age group, there were a slew of intriguing pieces throughout the tournament. Among those pieces is Segond Sompa of the Tennessee Travelers. Let’s take a closer look…

Currently standing at 6-foot-8, the rising junior possesses obvious physical appeal. He’s only been playing basketball for a few years, but is rapidly improving on both ends of the floor. We previously saw Sompa during the high school season with Grace Academy, where he showcased enticing physical tools and a fairly raw skillset. Fast-forward to now, and it’s easy to see the strides he’s made over the last eight months. His overall feel for the game seems to improve with each passing contest.

The increased repetitions have clearly made him more comfortable on the court, both with and without the ball in his hands. Sompa utilizes his physical tools to his advantage, as he has the length and strength to consistently finish through contact. He plays above the rim at a solid rate, spaces the floor as needed, and runs well in transition. So much of Sompa’s value comes from his physically imposing presence as a rebounder and interior defender. His motor, toughness, and physicality are evident on both ends of the floor. Sompa is still just scratching the surface as someone who simply hasn’t been in America for very long. Expect him to continue making noise as he trends upward.
