Following tonight’s slate of games, the Final Four in all the NCHSAA classifications will be set. Although this new, seemingly unnecessary realignment for public school programs appeared to be a direct money ploy at first, it’s actually made for some highly entertaining playoff games. In turn, we will take a closer look at each of the upcoming semifinal matchups as they are determined, skipping over to 1A…
Vance Charter (1) v. Southern Wake Academy (2)

Tipping off later today, the top two seeds in Vance Charter and Southern Wake Academy will face off. Since neither team has been challenged to this point (all wins coming by double digits), perhaps this contest will feature more excitement and intensity. The Knights of Vance Charter have enjoyed a very successful season, going 21-2 and currently in the midst of a 16-game winning streak. Although guys like Nick Pentoney and Keyan Richardson have been key leaders, Gary Wilkins clearly stands out as the most productive player on the roster. Given the way they’ve thwarted most opponents this season, it’ll be interesting to see if that trend continues.

Meanwhile, Southern Wake Academy has maintained its success despite graduating several difference-makers from last year’s squad. They’ve suffered five losses this season, primarily to legitimate contenders, and should be hitting their stride at the ideal time. Their only head-scratching defeat this season was a three-point loss to Woods Charter (a team they beat by more than 30 last meeting). Regardless, Kobe Plata continues to shine as an all-around leader from the point guard position. Justin Frye and Tony Lopez are having breakout seasons while guys like Sodienye Fubara and Broderick Barnes also play critical roles. Given their experience, both in playoffs and against noteworthy opponents, it would be difficult to bet against Southern Wake Academy. Both teams have strong cases, but the Lions’ talented core will likely be too much to handle.
