Following tonight’s slate of games, the Final Four in all the NCHSAA classifications will be set. Although this new, seemingly unnecessary realignment for public school programs appeared to be a direct money ploy at first, it’s actually made for some highly entertaining playoff games. In turn, we will take a closer look at each of the upcoming semifinal matchups as they are determined, moving on to 6A…

Northern Nash (1) v. EE Smith (3)

Although these two teams reside in the East region, this will be their first opportunity to compete against each other this season. Although Northern Nash has enjoyed consistent winning seasons throughout Coach Henry Drake’s entire tenure, their success this season was somewhat unexpected. The Knights’ slew of senior pieces, Christian Barnes, Jah’Marzea Williams, Jamiere Harris, and Chris Silver, have each been incredibly important to this group. However, the immediate emergence (and productive output) of freshman Quantay James was largely unforeseen. Add in Kingston Little, and Northern Nash has a legitimate rotation that can compete with anyone. Following a 15-game winning streak, they suffered losses to Hunt, Aycock, and Rocky Mount. Can they regain their stride amidst a five-game winning streak?

Conversely, EE Smith has seen some pretty normal ups and downs throughout the season. Despite losing a handful of games, only one of their five losses has been by more than five points. They play every opponent to a close margin, and this contest should be no different. The Golden Bulls have great balance between their top three guys, getting a bulk of their production from Nick Smith, Jackson Williams, and Patrick Barber. Josh King also provides meaningful minutes for this squad. Upon looking at their schedule, Northern Nash might be their most challenging opponent all year. Can EE Smith upset the top-seeded Knights? Or will the Knights continue to roll?
