Following tonight’s slate of games, the Final Four in all the NCHSAA classifications will be set. Although this new, seemingly unnecessary realignment for public school programs appeared to be a direct money ploy at first, it’s actually made for some highly entertaining playoff games. In turn, we will take a closer look at each of the upcoming semifinal matchups as they are determined, skipping over to 3A…
Kinston (2) v. Martin County (4)

In a contest featuring two notable squads from the East region, there should be plenty of excitement in the building. Still one of the most successful programs throughout North Carolina, Kinston has battled its way to the first state title game in over a decade. Keyshawn Herring consistently turns heads for this group, showcasing dynamic athleticism with the feel, skillset, and intangibles to lead on a nightly basis. However, the Vikings have a slew of legitimate contributors. Jamarion Washington is a strong downhill guard with pace, quickness, and scoring polish. That being said, they have a tough, battle-tested group of guys who compete with energy and embrace their respective roles. Add in the experience of their long-time coach, Perry Tyndall, and it’s always difficult to bet against this group.

On the other side, Martin County makes its first state title appearance since officially merging a few years back. Winning 12 of their last 13 games (their only defeat being an overtime loss), they’ve seemingly hit their stride at the perfect time. Fresh off a contest where they beat Farmville Central (a game many folks expected the Jaguars to win), this upcoming game will test this group yet again. Junior Jordan Matthewson has arguably been the most productive guy on the roster, but senior Kamarion Larry and sophomore Jayden Moore have also been vital to the success of this group. Jyhmir Hollis and Terquavious Roberson also provide meaningful minutes for the Gators. Given how competitive both teams have been throughout the regular season and playoff stretch, either team could emerge victorious.
