Following tonight’s slate of games, the Final Four in all the NCHSAA classifications will be set. Although this new, seemingly unnecessary realignment for public school programs appeared to be a direct money ploy at first, it’s actually made for some highly entertaining playoff games. In turn, we will take a closer look at each of the upcoming semifinal matchups as they are determined, looking at 5A…

Huss (1) v. Jay M. Robinson (2)

No disrespect to the other side of the bracket, but it feels like the winner of this game will be the odds-on favorite to win it all. Anyone who has watched Huss over the recent months should already understand the legitimacy of this team. Jaleel Smith is, for lack of a better term, that guy. What he’s doing (as a sophomore, no less) is unbelievable. Not only are his per-game numbers ridiculous, but his ability gives this team a real chance to beat any team on any given night. However, junior Zii Phillips is another incredibly vital part of this team. His playmaking, shooting, defense, and general blend of IQ, energy, and toughness allow him to shine as a leader on both ends of the floor. Guys like Zach Anderson, Ametrius McCoy, Omari Lockhart, and Antonio Griggs also provide meaningful minutes.

That being said, Jay M. Robinson might be the most overlooked team in the state. They have an astounding five guys averaging double-digit scoring. Four seniors, Noah Speller, Da’Montre Harlee, Jamell Reid, and Roger Walton Jr. have all enjoyed their best seasons yet while junior CJ Miranda continues to show considerable growth. The Bulldogs can go into their bench as needed, but they’ve stood strong behind their core grouping all season long. Following an early loss to Mooresville (title semifinalist) and a few defeats earlier in January, they’ve closed the final stretch of their season with a perfect 14-0 record. Again, the winner of this game has all the tools to win it all.
