Jason Porter has five big men that impressed all of us at the Phenom 150

Every year the top talent from around the South gathers in Greensboro NC for Phenom Hoop Reports 150 event. This Sunday saw 200 or so young HS players gather in an attempt to make their mark and get themselves noticed. Over the next few articles we will be highlighting some of the names to know starting with the big boys that shined.

Dericko Williams, 6’7 2019 F at Kinston HS – The rims were literally scared to death when Williams was on the floor as he looked like he was trying to rip them off the backboard all day long. He was easily one of the brighter shining prospects in the gym today as he combined, power, speed, and aggression in a way n other big in the field did start to finish. He has the type of bounce that has his head at the rim on the finish and the strength/speed needed to ensure no one stops him on his way there. As he moves forward we would love to see his jumper develop but so far we have seen nothing to suggest that he is not a next level player.

Demilade Adelekun, 6’7 2019 F at Gaston Day – Demilade is a raw young big that has promise. When we were watching we saw a good motor on this kid and signs of more to come but he still needs to be developed. His motor is his best tool at this point but he did show signs of a developing post game. He was nice on the glass all game long but right now he’s more project than finished product. Size and motor will get him noticed, and if he develops the rest of his game he could be one to watch in the 2019 class.

Alex Michael, 6’5 2018 F at Greensboro Day – GDS always has solid players grounded in fundamental play. Alex is a player that fits this mold perfectly. You can tell he has been well coached and knows how to play to his strengths. He is not the bouncy, attack the rim type beast that a Williams is but he is a very smart and efficient player that showed he can get it done in and around the lane. He keeps the ball high, has soft hands, and made the plays he was supposed to make out on the floor. Kid is type of player a coach can put out on the floor and know will deliver good things from.

Conner Sparrow, 6’5 2018 F at East Forsyth HS – Conner has one of those sneaky good games that creeps up on you as the game goes on. After a slower start he came on to show a quality game based in fundamental play. He has soft hands, good length, and good touch around the lane. As he develops we would love to see him get a bit tougher and stronger so that he can handle the inside game a bit better than he showed. He has the type of size that is going to generate looks and the type of game that will hold your attention once your eyes are on him. Solid work from him today in this one.

Matthew Brown, 6’7 2018 F at Spartanburg Day – Brown is a young big that shows real stretch 4 potential at the next level. Brown stepped out and hit several 3’s on the day while we were watching him work. He relies a lot on his face-up game at this point as he loves to drift out to the wing. His next step in his development should be to develop his inside game more so as to compliment that range on his jumper. He showed good timing on his shot blocks but will need to get stronger as he moves forward. Nice looking stretch prospect in the 2018 class in the state.
