AAU Coach Evaluation: Matthew Mensia is a matchup nightmare. He has the ability to play inside as he is big and strong enough to battle in the paint, score and defend front court players. He also has the capabilities to score from the outside and the quickness to defend smaller players. His sweet touch from behind the arch and his ability to get to the basket creates so many problems that he has coaches scratching their heads! He is a mid major schools dream at the wing position and maybe even the off guard – Coach Lamar Claiborne, Head Coach – Team Loaded 757
Coach Frank Says: Matt is a big physical guard with very good skills who can use his strong frame to overwhelm many guards and get to the rim or employ his crafty playmaking ability to score or get the ball to an open teammate. Matt attacks the rim with a vengeance, finishing through contact. He also has the ability to knock down the three pointer at a high percentage and hit the middle jumper off the bounce. Matt is a tough defensive assignment because of his combination of size and skill. He is one of the 757’s most versatile players who has carried the scoring burden over stretches both in high school and AAU. While he is often found battling inside where he is a very good rebounding guard, Matt can guard multiple positions demonstrating sound footwork and defensive technique. You have to keep a body on him because he is so active especially going to the basket and getting stick backs. He is deceptively quick, is a well schooled defender. Matt is a stat sheet filler who not only contributes scoring and rebounding but will distribute the basketball and get teammates involved. He is a high IQ player, plays hard and communicates. He is coming off a solid season and a strong summer where he has begun to attract the attention of college coaches. Expect Matt Mensia to be one of the most talked about 2019 prospects in the state and watch his stock continue a steady climb as his high school career progresses.
