The game of basketball is unlike any other. Not only is the actual style and structure completely unique, but the game has arguably evolved more than any sport—especially in the last ten to fifteen years. For example, shooting has become more valuable than anything else. An NBA team without shooting should just go ahead and hang it up, because making it through the season is going to be a draining process. While a lot of this can be attributed to rule changes allowing for less physical play and generally more spacing, basic math was eventually going to trend towards more three-pointers anyway. It’s not quite as significant in the high school and college levels, but still incredibly vital. So, why is this information relevant in regards to Joel Baucom' He’s solidified himself as one of the premier shooting threats across North Carolina, but it’s time we identify the strides he’s made as an all-around player.
Although folks definitely started to notice Baucom throughout his most recent season at Combine Academy, few realize his background. He’s the youngest of six siblings, and will follow in his mother’s footsteps by securing opportunities to play basketball at the collegiate level. Baucom reclassified and still remained one of the younger kids in his grade, which also allowed his body to properly develop. In terms of his actual game, Baucom has utilized the last year to really showcase his abilities as a creator and overall leader. He’s done a particularly impressive job of addressing his weaknesses and proving himself as a reliable defender and athlete without compromising his elite status as a shooter. Baucom has obvious value, specifically in his ability to be a focal offensive point or apply constant pressure without the ball in his hands. His knowledge of the game is clearly evident in the way he operates, able to consistently make positive plays and intelligent decisions alongside any collection of teammates. Add in his high-level academics, and Baucom should have a variety of programs competing for his services over the next calendar year.
