The Phenom Team Camp had teams from all around North Carolina come to Bermuda Run (NC) the other weekend, as teams looked to set the standard early on, build early chemistry, and also showcase what they will be producing on the court this season. A team that we were excited to watch was Marvin Ridge, a program that was a surprise team last year for many but will be looking to replace some key guys from last year’s team.
We dive into a few of the players that stood out throughout, as they look to be the go-to options early on for the Mavericks.
2028 Fleet Payne
Payne continues to be such a valuable piece for this team, and he has a chance to shine even more as one of the clear leaders on the floor. At 6’3 and at his position leading the offense, Payne brings a strong balance of IQ, feel, vision, and scoring to the court. He is comfortable in being an effective scoring presence from outside behind the arc when needed, as well as being able to penetrate. He makes smart decisions and never seems sped up, reading the defense, finding teammates, and making the right plays at the right time. He will be counted on to step up even more after a strong season last year.
2027 Mac Habenicht
Habenicht is another prospect that has a chance to lead in a big way, and he showed that throughout the event with his shot-making and overall production. Plays with toughness and can be a matchup issue for some, especially when he can stretch the floor, knock down shots from behind the arc with comfort, and find ways to attack inside. Habenicht has been playing with a lot of confidence this summer and that should easily carry over into the high school season.
2028 Ty Lorenzo
Lorenzo looks to be the breakout player for this team. Standing at 6’5, he seems to be starting to truly understand and put it all together with his size, versatility, and shot-making on the court. Lorenzo’s ability to step outside and stretch the floor at 6’5 was certainly noticeable, but it seems his confidence has grown more with his ability to attack and be more assertive off the bounce. If he continues to improve, Marvin Ridge will have three key guys to look at, along with strong depth overall on the court this season.
