Start of the Season:
Payne has started the season with his new program at Legacy School of Sport Sciences, and so far it has gone well for the junior guard. He has been able to develop his role with his new team, as he looks to be the best player he can be.
“It has been great,” he told Phenom Hoops. “I love all my teammates and the coaches; I am blessed to have Coach PJ by my side. I love legacy, it has been great. My role has been to become a leader; just be the best player on the floor at all times with or without the ball. My thoughts on our team are that we have a tough team who plays together and wants to see everyone win; we just buying into winning.”
When asked more about his game individually, Payne would describe himself as a tough guard that just gets it done, no matter what is needed from him. He is looking to improve his defense and stay consistent.
Recruitment Update:
Payne’s recruitment has gone well, as he has racked up a few new offers as of late. His latest offer came from Tulane, as they are starting to develop a solid relationship with him.
“I think they have a great program; another Louisiana guard goes there in Jalen Cook and they say they like the way I can go score the ball,” he said. “I have a good relationship with coach now, he checks up on me and after games, he texts me and tells me to keep killing.”
Tulane is the latest school from Louisiana to offer the 2023 prospect, as he also holds offers from Louisiana, Grambling State, and New Orleans as well, along with North Texas. Outside Tulane’s latest offer, Payne would say Louisiana has been on him a lot as well.
“What stands out to me about them is they let their players play and let their guards go,” he said. “My visit was great; I really like the campus and the coaching staff.”
Being from Louisiana as well, could playing back in his home state play a key part in his recruitment'
“It is a thought, definitely, playing in my home state because I know they are going to show love.”
Outside his offer list, Payne also mentioned that schools like Saint Louis, Ole Miss, Rice, Georgia State, Northwestern State, McNeese State, Oral Roberts, and a few others have shown interest his way in the past as well.
As far as a timeline though goes, Payne is looking to ultimately decide before his senior season. He also has future visits to Saint Louis, Ole Miss again, and North Texas.
