On this latest episode of Live With Brandon Blakney Extra, we visited 3A state champion hopeful Southwest Guilford during open gym workouts!
The Cowboys are coming into the season with as much hype as any team in the state, and there is a lot of excitement amongst the coaching staff and fan base surrounding this group. The team is led by a catalyst of seniors that have been together for a long time, this special group is dedicating this season to honor fallen teammate Dez Woods.
Backcourt- The guard play will be crucial for this team they have a good mix of star power and depth.
2019 6’0 Keyshaun Langley (Uncg Commit)- The floor general for this group is battle tested on the biggest stages. A leader on and off the floor, Langley will make life easier for these other scorers around him, he is a guard who will control the tempo of the game. Langley will command respect from defenses with his offense, and he along with brother Kobe Langley bring the noise defensively.
2019 6’1 Kobe Langley (Uncg Commit)- The other half of the backcourt is Kobe Langley, the combo guard has big play athleticism. Langley is a proven three level scorer, he’s good creating off the dribble and at 6’1 Langley is an underrated finisher at the cup. Langley is good off ball as well, he’s a shot maker with nice range behind the arc. Defensively both these brothers are menaces to opposing ball handlers.
2019 6’1 Milli Huggins- Huggins was the starter at point guard last season and he will still be expected to play a big role within this back court. Huggins is another capable ball handler, he’s tough with the basketball and Huggins won’t commit turnovers.. Huggins can provide a spark offensively and he is a willing defender.
Front Court– Versatility will be a huge strength here these guys will be able to space the floor out, and open things up in the lane.
2019 6’5 Jaden Turner- Turner had a breakout junior season last year, he averaged 16 points and seven rebounds per game down low for the Cowboys. Turner is athletic and long enough to bang on the boards with bigs down low, he’s a strong finisher around the cup, and this season Turner has added the three ball. The staff is excited about the potential season Turner can have, he’s coming into senior year now with even more in his bag.
2019 6’4 Christian Martin- Martin is another guy who’s stock is on the rise, he’s transformed his body over the summer and Martin is moving around better than ever. Martin is physical enough to match up on bigger players in the paint, but he has the skill set to play on the perimeter also as a big wing. Martin can shoot it from deep, and he’s always been known as an explosive finisher off the bounce. Martin has broken onto the division one radar Elon is showing strong interest as of late.
6’4 2019 Joel Pettiford- Another athletic combo- forward, Pettiford had a very productive summer and scouts are raving about the upside. Pettiford is still a bit raw but he’s got tools to build on. At 6’4 Pettiford is an effective slasher and powerful finisher at the rim, Pettiford moves well in space and he’s usually one of the first guys down in transition. Pettiford utilizes his athleticism on the defensive side as well, Pettiford is going to make his matchup work.
The Skinny– This will be one of the most talent teams in the state regardless of classification, they have a possibility of starting five division one caliber players. Head Coach Guy Shavers compares this group to a “homeless Golden State”, in part because of their depth. The Cowboys will be able to pressure teams all game, with the luxury of having enough bodies to stay fresh. Southwest is locked into one of the toughest conferences around, but this group could be built to go the distance!
