There are so many things that can determine an individual player’s path to success in the game of basketball. Obviously, talent is required, but it’s clear that everyone has to run their own race and let the results fall where they may. Think about Latrell Allmond and his ascension to greatness over these last few years. From O’Neal School to John Marshall to Petersburg, each situation has helped him blossom into his current form. Although his national status has grown considerably over the last few years, it’s always been evident that Allmond had the makings of a potentially special player. This notion is only further solidified by his selection as a 2026 McDonald’s All-American.
In December 2022, we stated, “Despite being only a freshman, Latrell Allmond was quite possibly the most impressive prospect in attendance. He’s already so polished with an incredible combination of feel, fluidity, and overall skillset. Allmond is a legitimate matchup problem who can handle, pass, and shoot the ball at an elite level for his size/position. That being said, he knows how to utilize his size and take advantage of any smaller opponents near the basket. Allmond displays soft touch with either hand and great strength when rising up to finish above the rim or through contact. He also possesses footwork, perimeter shooting, rebounding instincts, and excellent instincts for anchoring the paint defensively. It’s difficult to point out any real weaknesses within Allmond’s game or identity. He’s clearly a high-level talent who should be regarded highly amongst Division I coaches and national media outlets over the coming years.”
It was easy to see the maturity and refinement in his game at an early age. Being a high-level athlete with IQ, size, and an array of favorable physical tools certainly didn’t hurt either. Given his age and his talented collection of teammates at this time, he only becomes more impressive. Allmond only continued to improve his body while becoming one of the most malleable players in the country…
Fast-forward to the most recent travel ball season, and very little changed, stating, “It’s no secret that the game of basketball is constantly changing. Every decade or so, we see new coaching strategies, developmental ideologies, and emphasis on specific archetypes. Though he does fit the modern mold exceptionally well, someone like Latrell Allmond could genuinely find success in any era. At 6-foot-8 with IQ, athleticism, and two-way versatility, he possesses an incredibly high floor and ceiling. Allmond is a reliable initiator with a terrific handle, particularly for his size, and strong understanding of when to attack versus defer. He makes intelligent decisions as a creator with the ball in his hands but is more than comfortable applying pressure as a cutter or spot-up option. Whether posting up, hitting jumpers, or attacking downhill, seemingly every scoring avenue yields positive results. On the other end, Allmond defends multiple positions with relative ease. Not only is he big and strong enough to guard bigger opponents, but his length and quickness allow him to contain smaller players. In addition to his switchable defensive presence, he’s a strong rebounder with the ability to grab and go in transition. Allmond is simply a phenomenal all-around player whose physical tools and general lack of weaknesses make him a real nightmare for opponents. It’s easy to envision him producing at virtually any program in the country.”
Now, it seems like there is more universal love and appreciation for Allmond throughout the country. Everything said then remains especially true today. Due to his extremely adaptable all-around game, the Oklahoma State commit has various pathways to playing in the NBA. Although different from one another, it feels like Allmond is further ahead of someone like Kobe Brown at the same stage. That being said, it wouldn’t be surprising if he ultimately ascended even higher in the professional ranks. Allmond has simply outperformed expectations at every opportunity, so why stop now?
