Traveling over 3,800 miles from Hawaii all the way to Kansas City, the Kona Stingrays did more than just compete at the 2025 US Open Basketball Championships (Central Division) — they brought grit, heart, and talent.

Competing in an event that was filled with tough competition and strong programs, the Stingrays wasted no time making their presence known. From the opening tip, their intensity, energy, and team chemistry stood out throughout their time at the US Open Championships. Game after game, they battled, played with a toughness, and proved they belonged on one of the biggest grassroots stages in the country.

Led by a balanced attack and relentless effort on both ends of the floor, Kona went undefeated in pool play and got things going in bracket play all the way to the championship game — an impressive run that turned heads and earned respect from coaches and opposing teams. While they ultimately came up just short in the final matchup, there was no question that the Stingrays proved themselves in a big way.

Their performance was a clear message: Hawaii hoops are here to compete.

The level of play the Stingrays displayed over the weekend at the US Open Championship showcased not only the program’s talent but also their culture. Competing with heart, they left Kansas City with more than just a runner-up finish — they left with national respect.
