It’s amazing how quickly things can change in high school basketball. Whether players relocating, individuals developing, or something completely different, there’s never a dull moment in the grassroots landscape. Right now, the majority of kids can be seen playing with their high school programs at team camps or the association-specific events hosted by the NCHSAA and NCISAA. This period afforded us the opportunity to get a closer look at the potentially special backcourt pairing at West Charlotte in Kaharri Coleman and Chacho Womack. To say both guys highlighted a lot of ability throughout the weekend would be an understatement. Let’s take a closer look…
In looking at Coleman’s trajectory, it’s difficult to envision him not being a high major prospect if he continues on his current path. He simply checks every box. At 6-foot-3, Coleman is a highly intelligent point guard who runs a team with an incredibly strong blend of pace, poise, and unselfishness. He possesses an extremely calm demeanor and seems largely unaffected by defensive pressure with the ball in his hands. Coleman’s tight, crafty handle and ability to change speeds allows him to effortlessly break down opponents off the bounce. He touches the paint at a high volume and consistently makes the correct read. Coleman is a highly efficient all-around scorer who picks his spots within the flow of the action. He’s a terrific downhill threat with the size, strength, and explosiveness to reliably finish above the rim or through contact. Whether creating himself or others, Coleman processes very quickly. He sees the game ahead of others and breaks down defenses swiftly. Coleman’s IQ, vision, and sheer instincts make him one of the best playmakers in North Carolina, regardless of class. He mirrors opposing guards on defense and anticipates well to force turnovers. Coleman rebounds well for his position and reliably pushes the break in transition. There’s still a lot of time and variables involved, but he certainly has the makings of a national-level prospect.
Meanwhile, Womack is a cold-blooded scorer whose stock continues to visibly rise. He’s a seemingly perfect complement to his backcourt mate above, as he provides an incredibly polished scoring arsenal with quality creation skills and playmaking instincts. Womack is a quick-twitch athlete whose explosive first step allows him to blow by defenders with ease. His ability to change directions and get opponents off balance leads to a constant flow of pull-ups and downhill drives. Womack is also a lethal shooter and spot-up threat who capitalizes on any sliver of daylight. Lots of players can score the ball at a high volume, but his ability to put nonstop pressure on opposing defenses is quite rare. Womack only needs to see the ball go through the net once to catch fire. He fills it up from all levels and is comfortable with or without the ball in his hands. However, Womack is more than just a pure scorer. He’s showcased vision, rebounding ability, and quality defensive prowess. Womack is capable of taking over a game with relative ease. He’s visibly improved his body while rapidly developing his craft over the last eight months or so. It’ll be interesting to see how things unfold going forward, but folks would be smart to bet on Womack.
