Finally, we’ve reached the point in the high school season when things begin to shift. Despite all the preseason competition, holiday showcases, and subplots throughout, this time is arguably as exciting as any period in the year. Each game has playoff implications. All kinks should be figured out, and teams should be hitting their stride. However, this is also the stretch when college coaches are hunting for potential diamonds in the rough. Although the state is filled with intriguing prospects in every area, folks should be paying attention to everything Josiah Guyton is doing. Let’s take a closer look…
Although we watched him several times throughout the travel ball season, it’s clear that Guyton has taken another step with Lincolnton. Right now, he’s posting nightly averages of 24.6 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 3.1 APG, 3.1 SPG, and 1.1 BPG with excellent 64/40/71 shooting splits. While the numbers are impressive by themselves, it’s also translating to winning basketball on the court. In a scenario where most people expected the Wolves to spiral following the departure of their top player, Guyton has been a major part of their success. The team currently sits at 11-7 going into the final stretch of their schedule.
Regarding Guyton and his on-court appeal, it’s easy to see his ability to lead a team. He’s a long, wiry guard with a nice combination of size, craftiness, and athleticism. Guyton is a polished scorer and reliable creator with the ball in his hands. He’s capable of filling it up in a variety of ways and applying pressure from all levels, yet still consistently looks to make the right play. Guyton is a reliable shooter, which allows him to toggle off the ball as needed, and can find opportunities as a spot-up threat. That being said, he’s a quality finisher who plays well through contact and above the rim. He quality rebounder and scrappy defender who utilizes his length and energy to cause problems for opponents. College coaches would be wise to take a closer look at Guyton.
