Now that we’ve finally reached the conclusion of travel ball and are starting to look forward to the high school season, there are numerous subplots and storylines worthy of attention. Among these topics is how Carmel Christian has a completely new look after several notable additions and departures. Folks should remember the incredible success guys like Kam Taylor, Bryce Slay, and various others have had over the recent years, but this team is quite different in terms of structure. Although Logan Johnson will receive the majority of the headlines, Hunter Gerould might be the biggest x-factor on the roster.
It’s worth noting that guys like Jayden Griffin, Noah Noch, and James Wood will also be key pieces for this group. However, the addition of Gerould gives this group a versatile, low-maintenance connecting piece with the ability to affect all facets of the game. He’s a long, wiry wing with an excellent combination of size, athleticism, and two-way instincts. Gerould is a skilled player who can score from all levels, create off the bounce, and make quality decisions with the ball in his hands. That being said, he doesn’t need a ton of shots to find production. Gerould knows how to find scoring chances within the flow of the action and is capable of making his presence felt as a cutter or spot-up threat. In addition to being a well-rounded offensive piece, he’s a versatile defender who forces turnovers, blocks shots, and contains opponents across multiple positions. Gerould also rebounds his position well and maintains a calm demeanor at all times.
Despite missing an extended period of time during the summer season, there’s no denying this group is better with him on the court. Gerould’s malleable, adaptable game will allow him to mesh with any collection of teammates and carve out a meaningful role. The Cougars will be another team in contention for a state title, and Gerould should emerge as a major x-factor over the next few months.
