This past weekend, Phenom Hoops took the opportunity to maximize our downtime and continue providing coverage throughout the region. While the event in Rock Hill drew a ton of attention, prospects could be found playing in numerous locations—including at the Triad Blue Chips East Fall League in Greensboro. We traveled out to Shining Light Academy and caught most of the action, and this article will take a closer look at some standouts and the coinciding storylines from the evening…

6’1 ’23 William Gray (East Forsyth)

After enjoying an extremely productive freshman season at Forsyth Country Day, Gray looks to capitalize on his move to East Forsyth. Despite the Blue Chips Fall League being one of their first opportunities to play together, Gray already looks quite poised and comfortable as the leader of this group. His leadership is clearly evident from the moment he steps onto the court and how he carries himself on either end of the floor. Gray displays IQ, toughness, and a willingness to do whatever necessary to provide his team with an edge. He’s a great defender with length, positioning, and anticipation instincts. Gray possesses skill and athleticism, which allows him to attack the basket and finish through contact or make his presence felt as a shot-creator from the perimeter. He scores the ball well from multiple levels and understands how to setup others as the floor general. Expect to continue hearing about Gray going forward.

A New Leader Shines for East Forsyth

Very rarely do circumstances arise where a player transfers and immediately becomes the leader and/or best player on the roster. Well, that seems to be the exact situation Gray is currently embracing after making his move from Forsyth Country Day to East Forsyth. That being said, the Eagles’ roster seems to have a quality collection of talent to pair with their new point guard prospect. More importantly, majority of their roster composition consists of older, experienced players. They should have the combination of talent, coaching, and intangibles necessary to emerge as a consistently competitive squad throughout the upcoming season.
