Grassroots Tip Off LIVE
Event Point Guard Standouts
By Jamie Shaw

5’11” 2018 Jalen Johnson
Durham Hurricanes

Johnson has come out this travel with something to prove and night in and night out, he has proven it. Possibly the most dominate player in the entire event, Johnson lived in the paint and was able to finish as well as distribute. He is a leader who makes his team better the second he steps on the floor, and college coaches are taking notice. After this April period, expect numerous offers to start flowing in.

6’ 2018 Junior Clay
Chattanooga Elite

Clay led his team to the championship of the 17u ACC bracket. His unwavering play got all of his team mates involved and his confident demeanor bled throughout the team. Clay is one who should see a significant boost of D1 recruitment as he just makes winning plays.

6’ 2018 Kenny Dye
Flight 22 Elite

Coming straight of an NCHSAA state championship, Dye has not slowed down. He has a calming demeanor on the court, but he also has the ability to shoot/score at all 3 levels. Dye has good vision and is a strong on the ball defender. D1 schools need to come calling now, as Dye is also a high academic student. A coaches dream.

5’9” 2021 Jordan McPhatter
Team Charlotte 15s

Despite playing an age group up and being smaller than most other players on the floor, McPhatter is typically the most talented guy. The lefty has a natural feel for the game as he plays with a great pace and keeps the defense its heels. He can distribute as well as score it at all 3 levels. There isn’t really a hole in his game. It will be fun watching this 8th grader get older.

6’ 2020 Lawrence Frost
Team United RDU 15s

Frost is a stock point guard who plays with complete control of the game, on both ends. He has a good handle and great pace which allows him to get into the paint on most possessions. He is very sturdy so once he gets even with his defender, he keeps them on his hip. Frost plays with a great demeanor and is a winner.

5’10” 2020 Jalen Coit
Upward Stars 15s

Everything about the game looks to come natural to Coit. The lefty just has a feel and confidence for the game that allows him to get done what he wants. He scores at all 3 levels and he gets into the paint almost at will. He is learning to take contact, which puts him at the free throw line often. Despite great spend, Coit is also never rushed in a game, which is a reason why he averaged over 25 points per game as a freshman this high school season. He scores, distributes and defends very well. A very intriguing looking prospect moving forward.
