Team: Goldsboro Cougars

As of 1/23: 13-3 on the season overall, and 6-0 in the Swine Valley 2A/3A Conference

As the high school basketball season across North Carolina moves deeper into its schedule, teams are beginning to separate themselves and establish identities as true contenders. Wins are stacking up, momentum is building, and programs around the state are making noise with their sights set on strong playoff runs. Phenom Hoops is taking a closer look at several teams putting together impressive seasons, highlighting the talent, depth, and consistency that continue to shape the high school basketball landscape across North Carolina.

Today, we take a look at the Cougars of Goldsboro, who seem to be clicking in the last month or so.  After starting the season off 3-2 with a tough opening loss and going up against a strong Washington team, Goldsboro has now gone 10-1 in its last 11 games and sits (as of today) undefeated in conference play.

The Swine Valley Conference presents some tough competitors who are having strong season as well, including James Kenan and Wallace-Rose Hill. But the Cougars, led by experience and talent, hope to come out on top. This is a team that is averaging nearly 60 points per game and brings a lot of veterans to the court as this roster is mostly made up of seniors and juniors. 2026 Nehemiah McNair has been consistent throughout the season, leading the way at 12 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.4 assist, and 2.7 steals, bringing production all over the court. But he has help from others that include 2026 Maurice Tyler (11.0ppg), 2026 Anoncezo Fields (8.6ppg), 2027 Seven Pounds (8.5ppg), and 2026 Jabrion Bynum-Armstrong (7.5ppg).

The Cougars have been strong throughout, as this is a balanced roster that has depth as well.  With the blend of experience throughout, it looks like Goldsboro could be a team to really watch out for as the season starts heading into the playoffs.  Can they continue to remain undefeated in conference play and find the same rhythm in the postseason? Time will tell with that, but they certainly are on the radar.
