We’ve seen a lot of players come through our doors over the years, varying in appearance, skill level, and everything in between. We decided to put forth a “Getting to Know” series on some players who have attended events over the past few years but still remain on the lesser-known side of things. Each of these prospects embody being a student-athlete and getting it done in the classroom as well as on the basketball court, and today’s edition will take a closer look at Ben Chestnut of North Stokes High School.
Though North Stokes isn’t considered a powerhouse program by most, it would seem that Chestnut is doing whatever he can to take the necessary steps to make this group relevant. Though slightly undersized for a forward at 6-foot-2, he’s shown the ability to lead while doing a little bit of everything on the court. Chestnut is unselfish and operates with a consistently high motor, showcasing a willingness to make hustle plays and involve himself in the action however possible. He scores the ball effectively from all three levels but also regularly mixes it up to generate quality opportunities for his teammates to shine. Chestnut also stood out as one of the top overall defenders on the team.
Last season, Chestnut posted nightly averages of 18 PPG and 8 RPG, and was ultimately recognized with All-Conference and All-County status to go with various honorable mentions. His best game of the season arguably came against Bessemer City in the playoffs, scoring 18 points and pulling down 15 rebounds in a winning effort. There’s still another full year to evaluate Chestnut, which could open up an opportunity with the right program at the next level.
