The Hoop State Fall League is underway, giving our scouts plenty of topics and players to discuss over the next few weeks before the season ahead. We are just months away from the start of the season, but the Fall League gives us a nice preview of what to watch this upcoming season, as we dive into several storylines.
A player that we have talked about extensively was back on the Phenom Hoops platform, as 2028 6’3 Gary Grear looks to be a player once again ready for a big season. When you talk about Pine Lake Prep, you start with the play of Grear, as he goes the team goes. Grear has been a player of consistent play throughout the year and put on a strong show in Week 1 of the Hoop State Fall League, which included an impressive 35-point showing in Game 2.
Grear is a dependable and productive 6’3 prospect who consistently sets the tone for his team. Opponents routinely make him the focus of their defensive game plan, yet he continues to find ways to lead, score, and impact the game. He plays with tremendous poise and confidence, attacking downhill, operating effectively in the mid-range, and stretching the floor with his perimeter shooting. Grear also sees the court well, creates opportunities for teammates, and contributes as a rebounder. Beyond his versatile offensive skill set, he is a true leader who understands what his team needs and consistently plays within the flow of the game.
Grear is coming off an impressive sophomore season in which he averaged 19 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.2 steals per game, leading his team in nearly all categories. He has steadily continued to improve his overall game and feel, but has been the definition of consistency throughout the year, and that doesn’t look to be changing this upcoming season. As the upcoming season approaches, Grear should remain firmly on the radar of college coaches. With his proven production, leadership, and expanding skill set, expect him to deliver another big season and continue establishing himself as one of North Carolina’s top 2028 prospects.
