After an exciting week of NCHSAA semifinal games, we have reached the final stop: state championships. All the time, effort, and competition since November have ultimately led to this one game. While there has been a lot of discussion surrounding the realignment of classifications, each of these teams has fought against worthy opponents to reach this stage. Despite restructuring, there is still plenty of talent in every classification. With games beginning Wednesday, we will take a closer look at each matchup, advancing to Mooresville versus Southern Durham (7A) …

Arguably the most exciting matchup across all classifications, Mooresville is coming off potentially the biggest “upset” of the playoffs. While many individuals already had North Meck penciled in to win it all, the Blue Devils had different plans. After keeping things close throughout the first half, Qua Bailey (16 points) proved to be a massive x-factor as things progressed forward. Outside of his scoring punch, their rotation of Christian Wilson (13 points), Jordan Walton (10 points), Nolan Ericson (8 points), Taurean McKinnon (6 points), Eian Bailey (2 points) provided their usual level of production. This group simply plays together. They have the right amount of veteran, battle-tested pieces who embrace their respective roles for the betterment of the team. For the upcoming contest: who will lead the scoring charge? Will they have the necessary pieces to shut down the opposing stars? Will this be a defensive battle or a shootout? All scenarios are firmly in play.

Meanwhile, Southern Durham advanced to the title game after a fairly dominant victory in the semifinal showdown. They established a double-digit lead in the first half and maintained that advantage through three quarters of play. Although things got closer in the final period of play, the Spartans were never in danger of suffering defeat. AJ Morman continues to shine as one of the best players in North Carolina, regardless of class. KJ Terry is turning heads as he continues to shine as a focal point while maintaining his very enticing trajectory as a prospect. However, guys like Aden Jeffries, Jakari Glaspie, and their slew of meaningful role players are vital to the success of this group. Will Morman continue to destroy all opponents and shine as the best player on the floor? Can their star-power overwhelm the depth and balance of a veteran opponent? Given the contrasting styles and roster construction, there’s a lot of warranted excitement surrounding this game.
