Finally, we’ve reached the point in the high school season when things begin to shift. Despite all the preseason competition, holiday showcases, and subplots throughout, this time is arguably as exciting as any period in the year. Each game has playoff implications. All kinks should be figured out and teams should be hitting their stride. However, this is also the stretch when college coaches are hunting for potential diamonds in the rough. Although the state is filled with intriguing prospects in every area, folks should be paying attention to everything Toot Clay is doing. Let’s take a closer look…

For those who don’t remember, Clay transferred over to Oak Grove prior to the high school season. Despite this adjustment, he’s seamlessly transitioned into being a clear focal point for the Grizzlies. The multisport athlete has been a completely dominant all-around leader, and the numbers certainly echo this sentiment. Clay is currently averaging 19.2 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 2.8 APG, 2.0 SPG, and 2.2 BPG while shooting an impressive 65% from the floor. While the numbers are incredible by themselves, it really highlights his ability to consistently affect all facets of the game.

In terms of his actual on-court identity, Clay is a natural glue-guy who simply knows how to make his presence felt on both ends of the floor. He’s a smart, versatile wing with the size, skill, and athleticism to cause a ton of problems for opponents. Clay can initiate the offense, create for himself and others, and effortlessly score the ball as a downhill threat. He’s a capable threat in the midrange but is arguably at his best in transition or finding ways to attack in the half court. Although Clay does a little bit of everything offensively, so much of his value comes through his rebounding prowess and switchable defensive ability. Given his blend of strength, quickness, and physicality, he’s able to guard virtually all positions at the high school level. Clay has continued to collect football offers, but is also clearly a scholarship-worthy basketball player.
