Finally, we’ve reached the point in the high school season when things begin to shift. Despite all the preseason competition, holiday showcases, and subplots throughout, this time is arguably as exciting as any period in the year. Each game has playoff implications. All kinks should be figured out, and teams should be hitting their stride. However, this is also the stretch when college coaches are hunting for potential diamonds in the rough. Although the state is filled with intriguing prospects in every area, it feels like more college coaches should be involved with Deshawn Coulter. Let’s take a closer look…
Although there have been some ups and downs for Victory Christian as a group, Coulter has done legitimately everything possible to set the tone as a focal point. Right now, he’s averaging 16.0 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 3.4 APG, and 2.4 SPG. In addition to being a veteran leader, Coulter leads the team in points, assists, and steals by a healthy margin. He’s clearly the main source of offense, both scoring and creating, for this group.
In terms of his on-court identity, Coulter offers great balance from the lead guard position. He’s smart, scrappy, and unselfish, which allows him to consistently outperform opponents on both ends of the floor. Offensively, Coulter is at his best when asserting himself from beyond the arc and knocking down three-pointers at a high volume, but also utilizes his open-floor speed to consistently generate transition opportunities. He’s a willing passer who can create off the bounce, touch the paint, and make reads with the ball in his hands. Coulter displays solid pace when attacking. On the other end, he’s a pesky on-ball defender and capable rebounder for his size/position. Despite the Kings’ record, they continue to shape up as one of the favorites in NCISAA 1A. Given how many programs are still in need of unsigned seniors, Coulter should appeal to various college coaches.
