This past weekend, Phenom Hoops hosted our annual Summer Showcase at Rise Indoor Sports. The two-day stretch featured a healthy variety of talent from all age groups and allowed players one more opportunity to compete prior to rejoining their high school teams during the NCHSAA/NCISAA Live Periods in June. Although there were several notable performers, the DB Elite pairing of AJ Roberts and Brody Watkins clearly stood out as two of the top players on display. Between their individual production and team success, they definitely made a lasing impression. Let’s take a closer look at each…

After watching Roberts countless times over the last calendar year, it’s becoming more and more obvious that he’s a real problem for opponents. At 6-foot-2, his athleticism, physicality, and all-around game allow him to shine as a leader on both ends of the floor. Roberts is comfortable in several different roles and knows how to make his presence felt regardless of supporting cast. He can run the offense, offering strong penetration ability, playmaking instincts, and scoring prowess from all levels. Roberts makes smart decisions with the ball in his hands yet knows how (and when) to assert himself as a focal point. He’s a terrific rebounder and versatile defender who plays bigger than his listed height. Roberts is great at forcing turnovers and pushing transition play. His rugged, high-motor approach consistently leads to production. Roberts naturally affects all facets of the game while consistently shining as a leader by example.

In a similar vein, Watkins has been nothing short of impressive over the recent months. At 5-foot-8, he’s definitely unassuming to the naked eye. However, it doesn’t take long to recognize his impact on the court. Watkins is a pure gamer who constantly makes his presence felt through his motor and balanced offensive identity. He handles the ball with poise, consistently displaying the ability to create for himself and others off the bounce. Watkins possesses a quick first step and highlights excellent vision as a playmaker. He touches the paint at a high volume, makes correct reads, and scores with efficiency from all levels. Watkins finishes well for his size and displays phenomenal body control for his size. He frequently attacks bigger opponents and utilizes angles extremely well around the basket. Add in his pesky defensive presence, and it’s easy to see what he brings to this group.
Not only do they play together with DB Elite, but their connection carries into the high school season at Rolesville. Roberts was arguably the Rams’ best player last year, averaging 12.0 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 1.5 APG, 1.0 SPG, and 0.7 BPG while shooting 44% from the floor. Meanwhile, Watkins played JV and helped lead the team to a 17-5 record. Both guys should be definite varsity contributors and difference-makers for Rolesville next season.
