This past weekend, Phenom Hoops hosted our annual Rise Showcase at Rise Indoor Sports and the new Kernersville Sports Center. Between the two sites and various age groups, there was an abundance of talent on display. Although many organizations have been playing over the last month, several programs kicked off their season during this event. DB Elite loudly made their debut, dominating opponents en route to securing a championship. Although they have a roster full of intriguing pieces, it’s easy to see how the duo of AJ Roberts and Brody Watkins propel this group forward.

The year-round teammates possess terrific chemistry. Roberts is clearly the leader and focal point of this group, yet knows how to set the tone in a smart, reliable manner. At 6-foot-4, he’s a strong, physically overwhelming wing who consistently impacts all facets of the game. Roberts is capable of dictating the action as a primary creator, setting up others, and picking his spots as a scorer. He’s able to apply pressure from all levels but is at his best when getting downhill and attacking the basket. Roberts hits pull-ups and finishes extremely well through contact. He’s made strides as a playmaker and is truly showcasing an all-around game offensively. On the other end, Roberts is a quality rebounder whose motor, physicality, and nose for the ball allow him to be constantly around the ball. He’s also a versatile defender who can cause problems for several types of opponents.

Meanwhile, Watkins is a smart, heady floor general with sharp vision and a crafty handle. He’s quick, unselfish, and displays excellent pace with the ball in his hands. Watkins offers phenomenal balance from the point guard position. He’s able to consistently break down opponents and create opportunities for others while applying pressure from all levels. Though undersized, Watkins is incredibly tough and physical. He plays very well through contact when attacking the basket, but can also knock down jumpers from midrange or beyond the arc. In addition to his well-rounded skillset, Watkins is an extremely pesky defender with the necessary quickness and instincts to mirror opponents at the point of attack. Both guys are clear leaders for this highly talented, competitive group.
