Player: Darius Whitner

High school playoff is where stars are born… Not only are legends made in the state of North Carolina, but also so many players leave lasting impressions after a strong showing. Watching the Southern Durham vs. Garner showdown in the Elite 8 recently, these two teams were trading blows back and forth as big-time players were stepping up in the bright lights.
One player who elevated and proved himself once again, and who is also an unsigned senior, was Garner’s guard Darius Whitner. He did all he could do before fouling out in overtime, in which he finished the night with 33 points. Whitner left it all out on the court, and he showed that he is worthy of a college program to snag late in the game, especially with what he can provide on the court.
Whitner has been an impact player every time we have watched him, as we had this to say at the start of the season:
“He’s always been a smart, steady, adaptable guard who provides a reliable presence on both ends of the floor. However, it’s easy to see how he’s elevated his numbers over the years. Whitner offers a quality balance between scoring and playmaking, showing the ability to consistently create for others while scoring within the flow of the offense. He’s a tough, gritty defender and nice rebounder for his size/position.”
He was a clear leader in leading his team this season, making his presence felt all over the court. Whether it was his leadership, grittiness on defense, playmaking and vision, and his ability to be an effective scorer on the floor, Whitner proved all throughout the season and in his final game that he is a college-level player that programs should take a second look at.
NC Top 80 Evaluation (2024):
“Starting off, we look at a player who knows how to consistently set the tone on both ends of the floor, Darius Whitner. He’s a smart, unselfish point guard prospect with a high motor and balanced approach to the game. Whitner is a reliable playmaker who scores effectively from all levels. He takes care of the ball, makes quality decisions, and understands how to properly break down defenses. Whitner is a quick, scrappy defender who mirrors opposing guards at the point of attack. Next in his development process is working to get stronger, as it would make him even more difficult for opponents to contain. Coach Doughty on Whitner: “Darius has a pretty high basketball IQ. He penetrates well off the bounce and was able to finish when getting to the basket. Mr. Whitner showed great touch around the rim. I loved his court vision and passing ability. He seemed to find the open man each time we needed him to. He impacted the game on both ends of the floor. Darius grabbed a few offensive rebounds in critical moments of the game.” Whitner proved to be an asset during camp and should remain a leader for Garner.”
