Last weekend, Phenom Hoops hosted our annual Memorial Day Classic in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The event featured a variety of intriguing individuals and teams across all age groups (including an abundance of noteworthy talent in the girls’ division). There were plenty of standouts across the board. Among those teams was Charlotte Aces Platinum, a program that consistently has an intriguing array of pieces. This squad was no different. In addition to their talent across the board, they have an unsigned duo in David Reed and Abubakar Cham that could certainly help a variety of programs at the next level. Let’s take a closer look at each…

Starting with Reed, who is a wiry post player with great length, mobility, and polish from the block. He’s a quality finisher who can face up or score with his back to the basket. In addition to his post moves, the 6-foot-7 Reed displays soft touch and the ability to play above the rim. He moves well without the ball to find open seams, but can also attack within a few dribbles and attack or set up others as needed. Reed secures rebounds at a reliable rate and utilizes his timing to consistently alter shots defensively. He fills the lane well in transition and offers a steady presence on both ends of the floor.

His frontcourt mate, Cham, is a strong, physical big man with a sturdy frame and low-maintenance identity. Although he’s shown the ability to find scoring opportunities within the flow of the action, Cham excels at doing the dirty work. His motor, physical tools, and blue-collar approach allow him to physically overwhelm opponents as an interior piece. Cham is a solid finisher with a great rebounding sense and a useful defensive presence. He plays well through contact and fights hard to secure extra possessions. Both of these individuals possess the tools to be valuable assets at the next level.
