The high school season got underway here with Phenom Hoops at the Carmel Tip-Off, with Northside Christian and Quality Education kicking off a HUGE weekend of basketball in the Charlotte area. The offense started clicking early on for both teams, as shots from outside fell early and the guard play was able to make plays on the floor. QEA came out strong and aggressive against the zone, as they took the early 15-9 lead after the first half. Both teams started to get going, with the guard play from Northside attacking but also knocking down shots. But the size and length from QEA started to get going. QEA was able to pick up on both ends, break down the zone defense, and get on the glass as they were able to increase their lead late and hold a 31-23 halftime lead. Tyson Barrett and Jermaurhiyun Anderson led the way for QEA, while Antonio Perkins and Josh Bullock led the way early for Northside Christian.
Northside Christian came out with energy and immediately cut the lead in half, and eventually was able to take the lead with two and a half to go in the third. NCA was able to get out in transition and really attack the QEA defense. From then on, it looked like it was going to be a back-and-forth affair on the court, as both teams were trading baskets through the end of the third and to start the fourth. Right when QEA built a five-point late, Northside was able to tie it back up at 55 with a minute to go, as the fans got their money’s worth to start the night.
It came down to the final seconds with QEA having multiple attempts to win it at the end but the ball just didn’t fall and we headed into overtime to start the event.
In overtime, Northside elevated their play even more and players like Kyrell Shaw and company hit HUGE shots to eventually push their lead late to double-digits and they never looked back, securing a big win to start the season.
