The fall season has arrived. With the college basketball season rapidly approaching, there’s no better time to look at transfers or freshmen who could potentially be immediate contributors at their new school. In the past, we’ve seen a ton of guys who bet on themselves, carved out meaningful roles, and grew into difference-makers. Given how open the college landscape feels, these players could truly emerge from anywhere. Though it’s not a hot take to claim someone in the ACC could be an immediate contributor as a freshman, don’t be surprised if Jaylen Cross is a key piece for the Demon Deacons.

For starters, Coach Steve Forbes has consistently praised Cross. Although Forbes is largely known for his ability to capitalize on the portal and maximize his collection of talent, he’s more than capable of getting quality production from freshmen. Consider Juke Harris, for example. He impressed during the preseason, earned an opportunity, and found real success as their sixth man. Now, Harris will likely step into a bigger role going into his sophomore year. This type of pathway could be very similar to Cross’s trajectory over the next twelve months.

Regarding what Cross brings to a team, he’s a high-level athlete with excellent feel, activity, and understanding of how to produce in several roles with varying levels of usage. He’s already added considerable strength, which will only make him an even more destructive defender. Cross is a phenomenal defender, offensive connector, and defender for his position. He’s the kind of player who consistently puts the team above himself, which is certainly more appreciated in college than high school. Cross is going to dive on the floor and make the extra pass. He’s going to embrace his teammates and do whatever possible to provide his team with an edge. Although nothing is guaranteed in athletics, Cross has the work ethic and skillset to make a lot of noise.
