One of the top prospects in the Class of 2030 here in North Carolina made some waves on Thursday afternoon as 2030 Sonny Watkins announced that he would be heading to Green Hope to play under his father.
Green Hope is coming off a season in which they finished 8-16 overall but could be returning several key players from last year’s team that did bring solid production. But one of the clear go-to options this upcoming season for the Falcons will be Watkins, as he is a talented young prospect that is able to flourish in a variety of ways.
With new leadership leading the way, Watkins will have an opportunity to shine with his overall game. When breaking down his game at a young age, there are a lot of things to like about his game with his blend of length, skill set, understanding, and overall versatility on the court. Watkins has experienced noticeable physical growth over the last six months while maintaining his fluid mobility and overall coordination. He possesses a versatile offensive skill set, displaying the handle, feel, and confidence to create off the bounce and score in various ways. Watkins is an efficient perimeter shooter who converts jumpers off the catch or dribble, attacks closeouts, finishes around the basket, and willingly makes the extra pass. He also rebounds effectively and can initiate transition opportunities himself. Defensively, his instincts and versatility allow him to guard multiple positions, and he still possesses considerable upside as he continues developing.
Green Hope will have players like Korell Griffin (11.4ppg), Ian Hazard (11.1ppg), and Wilbert Hennegan (8.1ppg) that Coach Watkins will be able to work with. But adding his son and a talented prospect in Sonny Watkins, the Falcons have a chance to make significant strides this upcoming season.
