Player: Karon Watlington
Class: 2027
School: Hargrave
Committed to: UNCG
UNCG has been able to find some success in keeping talent around the area at home, landing players like KJ Younger and Dionte Neal as of late, and they just landed another prospect that was formally in North Carolina in 2027 Karon Watlington. Announced over the weekend, the Spartans were able to stay consistent with him throughout and it paid off with a commitment, as Watlington will head back to North Carolina in the coming year.
Watlington is an intriguing prospect and one you can build around as he continues to develop at the next level. The 6’4 prospect brings a reliable presence on the court along with versatility with his blend of size, playmaking, poise, scoring, and impact in other areas. Watlington is a well-rounded guard that handles, creates off the bounce well, uses his length and athleticism to his advantage over defenders, and can play off the ball; does a lot of what is needed for his team to find success. Add on top his ability to be a good defensive presence on the floor, Watlington can be used in a variety of areas and that could easily be his role in the coming years as well.
In the end, UNCG is bringing another talented prospect back to North Carolina while adding a player whose versatility should translate well at the next level. Watlington’s size, poise, playmaking ability, defensive presence, and willingness to impact the game in multiple ways give the Spartans a dependable piece they can utilize in several roles. As he continues to develop and expand his game, Watlington has the tools to become an important contributor for the program. This is another strong recruiting victory for UNCG and further proof of its commitment to keeping regional talent close to home.
What Has Been Said:
“He possesses excellent size, feel, and balance from the guard position. Watlington is able to reliably and unselfishly dictate the offensive action while showing the ability to set up others while picking his spots as a scorer. He handles the ball with poise, applies pressure as a penetrator, and stands out as a quality decision-maker. Watlington mixes it up well from all levels and shows the ability to cut or knock down spot-up jumpers when playing without the ball in his hands. Add in his defensive instincts and useful rebounding for his size/position, and it’s easy to see his appeal.”
“ Watlington is a very skilled, well-rounded guard with great IQ and size from the point guard position. He touches the paint at a high volume and sees the floor well as a passer. Watlington is a useful scorer from all levels and is comfortable creating his own shot or operating without the ball. Great rebounder for his position. Next in his development process is working on the use of his off-hand, as it would make him an even better finisher around the basket.”
