From the time he was a freshman at Apex High School, Ian Boyd has had a celebrated athletic career. On Tuesday it all came to a culmination when Boyd committed to play basketball for George Mason.

As a freshman playing varsity basketball, Boyd averaged 13 points and 8 boards per game. As a freshman playing varsity quarter back, Boyd amassed over 4,000 total yards. Fast forward to his senior year, as we bypass Boyd leading his team to a North Carolina 4A state title as a junior, and Boyd amassed four division 1 football offers (Virginia Tech, ECU, App State, and Georgia Southern) and three basketball offers (George Mason, Radford, and Western Carolina).

Last season, Boyd averaged 16 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game and on the EYBL circuit this year Boyd put up averages of 5 points, 3 boards, and 1 assist. All of this while defending the opposing team’s best player, no matter the position.

Boyd has been a staple at numerous Phenom events, taking advantage of our platform on the showcase, AAU, and high school levels. See what we have said about Boyd through the years:

2013 Phenom High School Jamboree
We could spend countless hours in the gym and never get the frame of 2016 Ian Boyd. He is just blessed with that DNA. Boyd is a promising wing from Apex High School who defends multiple positions well and finished with 9 points. To note, he is also the starting quarterback for the football team, so has yet to get into full basketball shape.

Ian already sports an impressive resume. He is NC Top 80 alum, but most importantly led his team to the NCHSAA state championship last year. Ian averaged 15 PPG, but this doesn’t even begin to tell the story. Ian has a college ready frame and the ability to score from the perimeter or in the post. He is a great inside/out player. Coach Murphy stated, “Ian is a monster player! He has a great build and ability to finish in traffic and with contact. More importantly, Ian is a willing passer and great teammate. He is also excellent in defensive rotations.” Overall, Ian is a fierce competitor and has the ability to “will his team” to victory.

Boyd is George Mason’s second commitment in the 2016 class. He joins New York power forward Tony Temara. Last year George Mason brought in a large six player class, and will bring back Therence Mayimba who will be a RS Freshman.
